Event Shannon Mattern “Interfaces in an Expanded Field”, 10 January 2017

On January 10 2017  15.00 – 17.00 the [Urban Interfaces] group in collaboration with MCW’s Datafied Society initiative organize their second lecture and research meeting, this time with Shannon Mattern as a guest speaker. Shannon Mattern will give a talk entitled “Interfaces in an Expanding Field”. Shannon Mattern is Associate Professor in the School of Media Studies at The New School in New York. For more about her work, see http://www.wordsinspace.net/shannon/.

Urban screens, media facades, public kiosks, travel monitors, and smartphones are among the countless screens that permeate our urban environments, granting urban denizens access to local data and information feeds. Yet the screen-based interface and its prioritization of visualization privilege particular ways of knowing the city. Given the myriad forms of “intelligence” embedded into and flowing through our urban landscapes, perhaps we should think more expansively about what an urban interface can be, and how it can function as an epistemic and affective frame.
